Exhibition Title: BROKEN BOARDS
Artist: HELEN SHEARWOOD

Broken Boards invites viewers to explore the transformative power of perspective through bold, gritty photographs of broken surfboards, many of which bear an uncanny resemblance with the ocean. These once-functional boards, weathered by the sea and time, emerge as unexpected canvases, revealing profound beauty in their imperfections.
The story behind Broken Boards began at The Sea Garden Café, Prevelly, Margaret River, where a mosaic of surfboards forms an unconventional fence. Inspired by the splintered edges and abstract patterns, Helen captured layers of oceanic poetry through the lens, transforming the broken into art. The café’s support for this exhibition underscores the collaborative spirit of the Margaret River community.

Running from 13 September to 26 October 2025, this exhibition coincides with the renowned Margaret River Open Studios, Australia’s largest Open Studios event, offering visitors a unique experience in the heart of the South West’s vibrant arts scene.

In Helen’s words:
“Broken Boards is an exploration of perception and transformation, where fractured surfboards emerge as abstract art. These boards mirror our own complexities, reminding us that beauty thrives in vulnerability and imperfection. And can often be hidden in adversity. Through photography, I invite you to decide what is beautiful, and true, for you.”

This exhibition highlights resilience and the insights to be found in imperfection and adversity, encouraging audiences to see with fresh eyes and awaken new possibilities.
